Teeth Cleaning & Checkups

cleaningREGULAR DENTAL VISITS ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR HEALTH

Regular checkups and cleanings every six months are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. And in between appointments it’s important that you consistently keep your teeth and gums healthy with regular brushing and flossing. Professional cleanings by a hygienist more often than every six months can also be beneficial as part of a preventative routine. A committed goal of maintaining healthy gums and teeth is very worthwhile if you wish to keep your natural teeth for a lifetime and avoid costly dental problems.

Regular dental hygiene is important for adults and children alike, but children especially can suffer serious consequences when regular dental hygiene is ignored. Problems resulting from poor oral hygiene in children are significant, and can have disastrous negative consequences on formative years, including difficulties eating, sleeping and behaving, infections and low self esteem. For children that have difficulty cooperating with the requirements of regular dental care, such as children with dental phobia or mentally challenged children, we offer sedation dentistry for kids 2+.

xrayWHAT HAPPENS DURING A CHECKUP & CLEANING?

During a checkup the dentist will perform a thorough examination to look for any signs of problems, including taking x-rays, checking for tooth decay, and examining tissues inside the mouth. Early detection of dental problems usually makes solving them easier and can even save your life if serious issues like oral cancer are discovered. Without regular checkups, you may not be aware of dental problems until they cause significant damage. The dental cleaning is part of your front line of defence against gum disease and tooth decay. During your appointment the hygienist inspects the overall condition of your gums and teeth, removes plaque and tartar, polishes and flosses your teeth, and teaches you recommended flossing and brushing techniques. The hygienist can get rid of plaque and stains that you can’t eliminate with regular flossing and brushing.

preventionOTHER PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

In addition to regular cleanings and checkups, also consider these prevention tactics:

  • Brush and floss your teeth at least twice per day (or after every meal).
  • Use fluoride toothpastes and mouth rinse.
  • Eat a balanced diet. High levels of sugar and carbohydrates feed plaque producing bacteria. Calcium-poor diets increase chances of gum disease and jaw deterioration.
  • Wear a mouth guard. A mouth guard worn during sports activities can protect teeth from breaking. Also, they can treat teeth grinding.
  • Get orthodontics if your teeth aren’t straight. Crooked teeth are hard to keep clean. Aligning teeth limits the possibility of future dental problems.
  • Get sealants for back teeth. Sealants cover the deep grooves in the back teeth, protecting against tooth decay.
  • Don’t smoke. Cigarettes causes plaque buildup, gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer.
